"Kiso Hinoki (Premium Japanese Cypress)" refers to the natural cypress trees distributed from the Kiso region to the back Kiso region (southern Hida and eastern Mino areas). Here, natural cypress forests of over 300 years old are maintained, nurtured, and utilized through a harmonious relationship between the marvels of nature and ceaseless human intervention.
The Hinoki (Chamaecyparis obtusa Endl.) is a coniferous tree, akin to cedar and pine, and is a tree species indigenous to Japan. Within the same cypress family, there are five other species, which grow in Japan, Taiwan, and North America.
As the old saying goes, 'For wood, Hinoki; for flowers, the cherry blossom; for people, the samurai,' the Hinoki is esteemed for its straight growth, the beauty of its wood grain, its excellent durability, and antibacterial properties, and has been used in significant constructions such as the core material of the five-storied pagoda at Horyu-ji Temple since ancient times.
The northern limit of its distribution is Fukushima Prefecture, but in Japan, the area south of the Kanto region is generally considered the suitable habitat for growth.
